  ACT - Stephen Daws

For those who live in the Australian capital, a special welcome to our website! I hope you've already read the information presented on the site and that you are intrigued by its nature and the different approach that affectology offers.

I've been a practicing therapist for over 10 years. My background in therapy started when I thought that insufficient attention was being paid to stress management in the workplace, as resources dwindled and people were placed under more pressure. My attempts to change this in my own workplace were largely met with indifference by those in authority, and rejection from psychologists invited to deliver such training.

After years of learning and practicing mainstream counseling-style therapies, I finally started the training in Ian White's affectology. The approach of collecting scant information from clients was dramatically different to previous therapeutic approaches I'd studied, and caused me to be initially cautious and skeptical, not to mention "challenged."

But Ian recognized this challenge for someone with previous, psychologically based 'talking' approaches (with which I had been involved) and was very understanding, helpful and skilful. I had to learn to let go of earlier teachings that formed the basis of previous methods that were, quite simply, wrong! This took analysis, acceptance and perseverance. However, the struggle was worth every moment.

Since being challenged with the theory and practice of this work, I continue to be inspired by its subtlety, gentleness, permanency and high success rate. Quite simply, this approach works: in abundance! I'm also encouraged that continuation of affectology studies is compulsory for every af-x® Practitioner, and I look forward to further continuous learning with more enthusiasm than ever.

This work is at the forefront of professionalism and excellence. Irrespective of whether the origin of a client's discomfort is mental, emotional, behavioral, attitudinal or psychosomatic, the affectology theory is sound and af-x Therapy works. It's there for everybody.

You can reach me by e-mail at dawsy@alphalink.com.au or by calling the Canberra Medical Ecology Centre on 02 6282 6800.

Please feel free to contact me: there's no obligation and I would be delighted to hear from you.
