One of the benefits (some would say "scourges")
of a love for the work that I do, is the never-ending quest
for knowledge about this unfathomable entity we call the human
being, and its immensely interesting aspect that we call the
subconscious or emotional unconscious mind. So, this has led
to research into the intricacies of "what makes us human"
– from an emotional point of view.
Far from needing to create and develop new paths in neuroscientific
research, a cursory glance of research and study undertaken
over the last, say, 50 years shows a rich and full library
of "facts" and "truths" about the human
emotional condition already in existence. This arsenal of
researched knowledge has been ripe for the placing into an
organised and understandable overview (or, in the case of
affectology, "underview") of the human condition
as a whole. This has been my quest in the interest of support
of the conceptual underpinnings of affectology and af-x®
Therapy.
It has never been good enough (and never will be) to propose
that a therapist embarks on the treating of people without
a full understanding of the systems that he or she may be
manipulating and influencing. This is not only a folly, but
socially irresponsible and uncaring.
As a trainer, I have worked hard to include much of the technical
and conceptual knowledge in my training
programs, building a theory component that insists that every
af-x Practitioner knows not only "how" to
help people change, but "what" the complexities
of the human emotional structure have been that makes a person
"need" change. As mentioned before, in spite of
some outside opinions to the contrary, it is irresponsible
to work as a therapist or teach others to do so, without a
robust understanding of the neurobiology of emotion and "affect."
af-x and affectology training reflect this principle.
I have authored all aspects of the training
manuals and home study tutorials.
At present, two books about this work are being written, with
three books to follow.
The first is titled The Seven Deadly
Sins of Depression – Breaking Free of the Myths.
The second is titled Hey There,
You with the Sad Face – How to Bring the Power of Just
Being OK into Your Life.
