_Humanism
Although Af-x takes much of its "conceptual language" (the explanations about how the human mind works) from modern neuroscience, we are still much more interested in the business of human beings being HUMAN. In other words, more than the sum of the parts, including the brain and neurology.
While we are immensely interested in how the human subconscious encodes (remembers) and builds on early experience as an affect developmental picture, we are intrigued by how easily the new science of mind melds with age-old philosophy and simple commonsense. So, in its present form, the practice of Af-x and Clinical Affectology take equally from both bodies of knowledge. The wisdom of traditional Eastern reflective mindfulness therapies, that we may call 'insight therapy' and the scientifically technical knowledge of how we humans grow to be emotional creatures are not incompatible, and have found a perfect and highly effective blend in Af-x, the crux of commonsense therapy. It is difficult to point the finger at Af-x and Affectology and say that they are either 'humanistic' or 'neuroscientific', because they are BOTH. And just as Transcendental Meditation has found a comfortable place in the high-powered business executive world, and just as the Dalai Lama personally interacts with the Laboratory of Affective Neuroscience in Wisconsin, then Af-x Therapy and Clinical Affectology embrace both fields of humanistic and scientific thought, interest and practice. |
Affective Neuroscience
|
_As mentioned above, Af-x and Clinical Affectology have a foundation interest in
Affective Neuroscience. This may not necessarily be interesting for the
casual observer, but the fact that there is solid scientific observation
and data behind our work serves two purposes:
1. it helps you in an understanding that Af-x does in fact grow out of solid territorial knowledge and is not part of the so-called 'New Age' or 'alternative' tribe of therapeutic systems 2. it allows those more interested in what we believe is an interesting topic that affects the whole story of 'how we operate' to learn more. It also allows aspiring students of affectology to start their basic understanding. |
